Cookie and Domino
|
Domino, dad, is a classic English
gentleman. He’s black with white trimmings and a full blanket. Dom's
idea of a big day is running around the yard, snooping and snoozing on
the deck; then waiting for a goody to slip out of someone’s hand. He’s
so mild and charming. Everyone who meets him wants to take him home.
This soft-spoken individual brings to his babies
the best of all qualities: great looks, intuition, stamina, exceptional
temperament, and willingness. Both parents sport fine, thoughtful
pedigrees from a long line of excellence. (into the early 20s in some
cases)
Cookie is a natural huntress. Liver
and white full blanket, she brings home presents, live ones: chicks,
goslings, frogs; they are somewhat terrified, never injured. |
| I have too many
dogs, like some women have too many children. And, like those
mothers, I love every one of my children. Sure, I devote myself to
them all day, every day. Isn't that what good mothers do? Does this
seem silly to you? Do I want to be doing something other than this?
No . . . I love my days. Everyone asks . . . .
Everyone asks me this question:
How can you part with them? I've never forgotten any of them. They
each take a piece of me with them when they go. When I place a baby I've
doted on for eight weeks, I want to know that these new folks will give
this jubilant pup a better home than I can. That's how I manage to part
with my babies. Yes, everyone asks . . . .
How do I know about a family? Plenty has been
written about what to look for in a breeder, but little regarding how to
pick a puppy family. I've worked out an interview process: step
one, two, three. I'll be glad to share my experience if you are facing
this dread issue. You won't make too many friends. You will, however, be
able to rest knowing that out there, your little kinter is the light in
one, good family's life.

Sally
is quite a regal gal, one of the three sisters, she seems to
understand everything. Her puppy days are over, but that doesn't keep
her from raising other girl's pups. On walks, she keeps that batch of
rambunctious babies together. Charlotte, my sweetheart,
has never done anything wrong. She's the hall-monitor who rats out the
others. A wooly-coat, Charlotte is fastidious about her appearance,
working hours, at a time, to pull a burr from her ear.
Lily Dancer Lily is my sad-eyed thinker. She
dances about on her hinds, gaily, like a maiden dances, tossing her head
and smiling through her sad eyes. She rarely makes a mistake. Lily is a
tall girl but delicate in bone and manner.
Honey Brown Well, when "Gubbie" was little, she
reminded me of an old Studebaker, all nose and woolie to a fault. She
has become a grand lady, a faithful replica of all that is good in her
line. She's precocious, flirtatious, and otherwise funny; everything a
Springer should be.
Tuxedo Tux is a showy, young fellow, with the dew still
on him. I think he will be one of the finest Springers of all time. He
resembles the photos of Inchidony Prince Charming. Right now he's as
numb as a box of rocks . . . and proud of it.
May May May is a brilliant tri-color. She hunts. A
high-performance individual, I knew May was special before she was
weaned from her mom. At seven weeks she was climbing the ladder to
"help" me on the wood-pile. |
